Ethnic, smart and refined jewels

The collection INDIRA of Karawan is realized in India, in a workshop of around thirty women for the assembly parts and the manufacturing of the finishes in textile yarn.

The models are inspired by the tribal jewels of the State of Orissa which are shaped for more than 5000 years according to the technic of the lost wax. The pearls of brass are made too in the hand according to this ancestral knowledge returning every unique piece.

This workshop where the people work in respectful social conditions in accordance with the standards of the IWT, allows to value a knowledge singular which is more than 5000 years old and which is reserved for very marginalized zones by India today. So Karawan can revisit and maintain the tradition of the cast metal, by the creation of specific models.
A very refined mix between the tradition and the contemporary design.
Precious jewels, requiring a perfect control of the technic, but which keep a unique, irregular touch, signature of the hand of the craftsman.

To make pearls in brass :

A first unrefined model is made in clay. On this form, are poured wax bands, which are worked again on the hand by a dding detailed finishes. The wax structure will then be covered with wet clay to take the impression of the wax forms. Then the whole room will be warmed, allowing the wax to melt to leave a cavity with the imprint of the form wanted for the room of jewel. The brass is then paid into the cavity, which will take the form of the wax model. The mold of earth is broken revealing the pearl in brass.
